Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre ließen Musiker aus San Francisco aus der Asche der in Ungnaden gefallenen Discomusik ein neues Genre auferstehen: den Hi-NRG (für „High Energy“). Anfangs vor allem in Schwulenclubs populär, fanden die wilden Beats dank zahlreicher Hits „made in Europe“ rasch auch beim breiten Publikum Anklang.
